The United Republic of Tanzania is part of East Africa. It is 945,087 square km. The population is 37,849,133 (2006). Tanzania has been a republic since 1961 after gaining independence from the United Kingdom. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete is the president. The spoken language is Swahili. Tanzania’s official capital city is Dodoma, but the largest and most important city is Dar es Salaam.

Mwanza is the second largest city in Tanzania and has a population of 378,327. It is in the northwest of Tanzania and an important port on the southern shore of Lake Victoria which is the second largest freshwater lake in the world. It is located at an altitude of 1,140 metres above sea level and boasts a wonderful natural environment noted for its rocky outcrops which form stunning geographical shapes. Mwanza is the cultural centre of the Sukuma, the largest ethnic group in Tanzania.
Mwanza is twinned with Würzburg, Germany and Tampere Finland.
